So, I was mowing.....

When...... I spotted these two creatures in my yard:
The spider had made its web from several branches of an oak tree to the ground. In its web are a hapless grasshopper and one tiny beetle who almost got away.
Next, in my waning garden, I found this rather large caterpillar hanging just as you see him/her (note my finger which illustrates an measure of how large the critter is and him/her position on the tomato vine.
Did I mention that I don't care for the sometimes cute yet slightly frightening critters who have made it their business to surprise me in my back yard!!!

Them I captured these two delicate mushrooms near my back steps.

And finally, Monica from Button Counter was the wonderful hostess for Big 10 and these are my ten inch squares from that swap that I can't wait to get into.  Thanks for hosting Monica.

Show & Tell Swap

Recently I joined a swap for Valentine. Cheryll was our hostess and got everything organized. I made several things for my secret swap buddy, Beth. We were to make something heart shaped or with hearts on it and place the initial of our swap buddy on the object. I got a little carried away.

 Rug Mug
 Rug Mug
 Tea Towel
Table runner

Last week I got a wonderful package from Sharon, the person who pulled my name. I was so excited and ran in the house to tear open the package. I think I've mentioned that my mail lady is just as excited as I am.  She loved to deliver the mail just to see me running for the mailbox..... LOL
This is the beautiful wall hanging that Sharon made for me. Notice her intricate needlework.... Love it!!!!!

Thanks Cheryll for hosting this fantastic swap.

Gift Horse......and All!

I'm not looking this "gift horse" in the mouth......as you all may recall, I've been having computer....no make that Internet problems.......redirecting problems........*((&^^&$^&(#~)) in other words...ugly thoughts.
Anyway just a few minutes ago, I decided to try to log onto my blog again.......and what do you know
it worked...........I have no idea what happened but decided to post while I can.  Who knows what will happen in the next minute, hour, day......

Ayden's visit with GoGo was loads of fun and GoGo teased her about that hair.

Thought I show off one of the fabrics I'm using in the latest apron from Val.  I really love this one and remarkably, it wasn't hard to cut into it.....LOL

Tote It!

Paula over at Coffee Time challenged anyone who wanted to join in, to a holiday tote swap.  The neat thing about this swap was that everybody knew what was going on, who their swap partner was, what preference, etc.  I was so excited, I jumped on it.  My swap person was Mary who loves snowmen.  So, of course, her wish came true with the tote viewed from the front and back.

The next picture is on the great tote and goodies I received from Tudy....she really nailed it with the chocolates...hehehehehehehe......I'll be taking my tote grocery shopping very soon.  I also received 2 Fat Quarters, a pin cushion and a wonderful needle holder.  Thanks Tudy!!

Meanwhile - At age 55

So, I'm working on one of my swap projects hosted by a wonderful lady, Val......who comes up with the neatest themes, of which this one is "Alice in Wonderland."  The swap is now closed and we are all in construction and creative mode.  Val gives us plenty of time to create, construct and mail off our creations.  If you're familiar with "Alice," you know that the Queen of Hearts, the Mad Hatter and tea drinking are a big part of the storyline.  I've chosen a few embroidery designs and stitched them out this morning.  I'm telling you that it never ceases to amaze me that you can get on the Internet, browse the net, purchase whatever, download it to your computer and upload it to your machine in a matter of minutes depending on your proficiency with both computer and machine.  Anyway, that' just one project I'm into. The next is the "Stay at Home Round Robin" hosted by Kate.  This one is great because we are not under too much pressure to get things done.  So far I've done my 6 1/2" unfinished center (seen here) and now it's onto the next area, 4 X 6 inch pieced something which will be added to the left side of the center block.  Easy, hopefully.......LOL....I think you can still get in on this project just by popping over to Kate's blog to sign up and get the instructions.

Many thanks to all who helped me celebrate my birthday and left warm comments.  I had a wonderful day with family and friends and tried to stay inside as the temp was near 100 degrees.  I don't say it enough but I have enjoy thoroughly all my blogging friends, without your support, encouragement, advice and help, I would not have grown and developed in my sewing life or life in general.  I fine it refreshing to be able to post about something, whether it be personal or work oriented and within minutes to a day someone gives their prayers or aid.  You all are truly the best anyone could have the privilege to know.
I hope that wasn't too sappy but it is from my heart.

Recent Apron Swap

As some of you may know, I'm an avid apron swapper......my grandma wore them, as well as all my great aunts.  In my twenties thru forties, I was not in the habit of wearing them but picked it up again when I retired.  I've found several apron swap groups but fell in love with one in particular.  Val is the hostess of  Hot Mama Apron Swap and always seems to come up with some fabulous themes.
This past theme was Pin-up girls.  Above are the goodies that I received from my swap "angel."
I love quilting and machine embroidery but I also like to do other things such as the apron swap. I think it keeps me on my toes and inspires me in the quilting world.

Apron Surprise/For Your Eyes Only

SSssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
Here's another apron that I churned out yesterday. My secret partner expressed a love of owls, so I made an extra apron in addition to the heart pocket one in an earlier post.

What A Hoot!

This cute little owl comes from 2 soures: Fiesta and the link she passed onto me for Eileen's tutorial.  My little guy is not as neat as Eileen's but I'm kind of proud of him.  Thanks Betsy!

For Your Eyes Only!

Sssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
Don't tell anyone but this is my swap partner's apron from the Hot Mama's Swap.  My partner doesn't visit my blog so I think it's safe.......She wanted retro fabric with a Valentine theme.
Isn't the pocket cute? It's a padded heart stitched around almost to the top humps.  You can't see it but the very bottom is pleated. I've got a few more things to do but I'll get this baby in the mail by the weekend, hopefully!

Apron Fever

I'm in yet another "apron swap" with some good friends. Our theme was CHOCOLATE......one of my favorite subjects. Anyway, we were to make an apron for our secret buddy to send along with 2 chocolate recipes, cooking utensils and chocolate, of course. Mine is finally on its way! You can't really see the color but it's pink/brown fabric.

Summer-Mini Swap

Hooray! My swap buddy, Tara sent me a wonderful mini-quilt along with some fabulous goodies. Our challenge was to make something that reminded us of summer. Note Tara's writing, "Deep summer is when laziness finds respectability." By Sam Keen. That's what I'm talking about. I love the saying.
Along with the quilt, Tara sent a note to me, a package of "nickel squares," and 3 great fabric cards with envelops. This is so neat. Thank you Tara! Make sure you click on the link to Tara's blog to see what she's up to now.

Pincushion Swap & Favorite Fabric Monday

My swap-mate was Stanislava from Croatia. Originally, she sent something great which, since we live so far apart, didn't make it to my house. We then communicated via e-mail.......I told her not to worry about it and please don't feel that she had to re-send but she insisted and here's my package. Look at that beautiful, hand-crafted pincushion with the flower eyelet lace around the cushion. I've got buttons, floss, 2 colorful fat quarters, floral lace, a chicken tea towel (love it) and a great get-to-know-you note. Thank you so very much Simona!!!!!

This wonderfully subtle off white fabric comes from Windham Fabrics - "Family Tree" by Mary Koval - Circa 1840 Pattern #2317.
I like it because, of course, you can use it in any design for placement of color. And it has that crackled effect in the background lending interest.

Mama Mia Apron Swap & Birdhouses Cont.

Lookie what I received in the mail yesterday!!!! This wonderful package is from my Secret Pal Dayna. None of us knew who had whose name, just the information. I love my apron, thank you Dayna. She also sent wooden serving spoons, a potholder, what I call a nothing book because it has blank pages to write notes in, a recipe book filled with yummy "brunch" goodies and a recipe for a cool summer drink - "Easy Strawberry Lemonade." I am nearly speechless. I love everything. Thanks again Dayna. And thanks to our hostess, Valerie. Great theme!!!!!
Well, someone lit a fire under me because I went into my sewing studio and got busy. I am now caught up on my Birdhouse BOTM......well, except for stitching them down but that comes in August. It is so much fun picking all the fabrics but I try to clean up and fold my fabrics immediately after cutting from the larger pieces or my sewing area would look like an explosion....hehehehehe!
Sssssssssssshhhhhhhhh! Today is my birthday. Mom said I arrived stubbornly around 4 AM one hot and muggy August morning.............yep, that sounds like something I'd do aright!

The History of "Aprons"

I love aprons!
A wonderful email was sent to me by my girlfriend Judy-Judy! It was timely as I had just signed up for an Apron Swap. The subject was, The History of Aprons, which immediately caught my attention. I wanted to share it with all my blogger-friends.
I don't think our kids know what an apron is.
The principal use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath, because she only had a few, it was easier to wash aprons than dresses and they used less material, but along with that, it served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the oven. It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears.
From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven.
When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids. And when the weather was cold, Grandma wrapped it around her arms. Those bid old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove. Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron.
From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls. In the Autumn, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees. When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds. When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron and the men knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner.
It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that 'old-time apron' that served so many purposes.
Remember the 3 fabrics I showed you in a previous post....this is the results.

I made another just to see if I could do it again.......LOL "Four Corners Apron" is the pattern from Vanilla House Designs (P132) http://www.vanillahousedesigns.com/ I give this pattern 3 snaps up! Did I tell you that I love aprons!

Mini-Swap

Hello All! Lookie what I got in the mail today all the way from Germany. My secret pal was Andrea and of course I had no idea. There were alot of women and men signed up for this swap. The theme was make something that reminds you of "spring." So this is Andrea's interpretation and it's a great one. The colors that I love are greens, rusty browns, reds and yellows. She really knows what I like. On this quilt are 3 carrots and a rake........adding a 3D feel to the quilt. I also received a FQ, 3 embroidery threads and a wonderful card. Thank you so very much Andrea. And thanks to Michele for sponsoring this swap.
I just had to show off another pic of the Trumpet Vine.

Mini Swap

Michele over at QuiltingGallery offered another mini-swap, "Spring Blooms" and of course I signed up. The theme is about what happens in the spring....which brings to mind plant growth, spring cleaning, gardens, etc. I thought back to my childhood to what my parents and grandparents did. Spring was the time when they built barns, sheds, added that extra room onto the house or remodeled the kitchen. This was when neighbors pitched in to help one another. Where even grandma swung a hammer and wore a tool belt. So in honor of the springs that I remember so fondly I made my "gal pal" a mini "Carpenter's Wheel." Or course, I can't reveal her name or whereabouts......it's a secret but I hope she will fall in love with this little quilt.

"Fiesta"

My
"Hot Mama Fiesta" apron is finished but I can't tell you who the luck lady is just yet. This is only my second apron swap sponsored by Valerie, who is a great hostess.
If you know me, you know that reading instructions are not my cup of tea. So when I made the body of the apron with its pocket and tie, I was so pleased with myself. Only took me a day at our last retreat. Then, when I came home, I got out the instructions and realized that not only did I need to make an apron but said apron had a theme. Eeeek! "Fiesta" was the objective.....oh dear, wooooooo is me, etc., etc., etc.! What to do, what to do?????? Make another apron, start all over......NOPE! I found a design that I really liked for the guy and drew a gaiter. Using loads of Steam-a-seam and lots of stitching, again.......Volia! I love this apron.

;-}

Don't count the days, make the days count!
