One Eye At A Time

Greetings everyone!!
Gene asked a great question about my surgery the other day. Doctors recommend do Cataract surgery on one eye at a time so that's what I'm into at this point. The first eye was done last week and the second eye will be done next week.  I must say, I wasn't afraid at all and can see much better but am trying to get use to the brightness of these sunny days we are finally getting.
I could probably get in some sewing but I really don't want to strain my eye muscles (AKA) I'm being lazy for a bit.....hehehehehehehe
Hope you all are enjoying this month of March. Soon spring will be here and I'm really for warmer weather. Aren't you?

I've Made It Complicated String

I mentioned yesterday that I'm using Bea Ogesby's book on birds and Flowers. Well things have gotten a bit complicated.  Mr. Cowboy walked by, took a look and said, "The birds look naked!"
Sometimes I could just box his ears but I knew he was right.....SIGH!!!!!!!!  And I had made tentative plans to do just that.
So back to the drawing board. I decided to add a few branches and leaves.

I'll do some hand embroidery on this one which is the Northern Cardinal.

On the Cedar Waxwing, I've added a winding branch and leaves. I may add some berries but at this point I really need to pull back and not over do things.
What are your thoughts on the matter????
Have I bitten off more than I want to chew.....LOL!?

Sunday Evening String

Greetings all! I didn't think I'd get back to sewing but Mr. Cowboy didn't need me for feeding so I was able to sew a couple of days and was able to finish the string quilt top.
I used a type of tissue paper as a foundation and had to peel off the pieces from the back of each block.  Whew! That took a bit of time.
Then it was on to the borders. Gene asked about the size of the blocks. They are 9 1/2 inches unfinished. Also, someone asked about the coordinating colors.....that's a funny story that I'm sure we've all had to deal with. The fabrics were in a box that got pushed back to the dark side of the closet...hehehehehe, so when I found it the other week I couldn't remember what I'd saved them for and there was no design instructions saved either. So, string it would be.

After sewing on a 1 1/2 inch strip of the reddish fabric because I didn't have much of it left, I added a 4 inch strip of the moss green.

I really had to think about the last border because I knew I need to use black but it was going to look "non interesting!"  After sleeping on it, I came up with the idea of adding birds
I had a book by Bea Oglesby, "Birds - Flowers Album" which I love, so I've decided to place several birds around the black border. This first one is the Scissor-tailed Flycatcher.
I will also add branches and leaves. I plan to stitch each bird, branch and leaf onto the black border before I stitch that border onto the rest of the quilt. If some of the bird parts flow into the quilt, I'll fold that part out of the way, stitch the border to the quilt and then finish the part afterwards.

Honoring Veterans

Just a quick review of some of the quilts I've made to honor and give to the Veterans in my community.

Yesterday I was able to honor and salute the Veterans in my community. They got to choose a quilt or wall-hanging. They were surprised and very happy that someone thought of them.

I am so thankful and happy so honor them & I want to salute all Veterans who fought for our country. I also want to salute all who are serving in the Armed Forces today.

It's Wild Around Here

Warning!!!   Warning!!!   Warning, Will Robinson!!!!  Okay, sorry I couldn't help myself with that opening from Lost In Space which was one of my favorite TV shows way back when. But seriously, if you're squeamish, look away NOW!!!
All the photos were taken with my iPhone. It's a handle thing since my camera is always misplaced.

As most of you know who follow me, I live in the country where there are plenty of wild things lurking about. In the above photo you are seeing a mole.......dead, thanks to my cousin Clark. This critter had been wrecking my yard for weeks leaving giant mole mounds. Clark is the local mole exterminator & he offered to "take him out" so to speak.
He did it!!! The mole was very crafty but Clark was patient. Look at the teeth on this thing....OMG!!!
I'm sure this isn't the end of my mole problem but it sure feels good to know that the granddaddy of all moles is no longer.  Thank You Clark!!!
Update:  Here's the latest photo of little "Show Girl," Showee for short. She stopped, posed for me, even started towards me in curiosity, then backed up. She's so funny to watch. Fairly soon afterwards she realized that her mom had moved off so off she dashed with her little tail in the air.
This beauty was fluttering about as I was gathering up some fallen branches after the big storm the other night. I was able to get quite close for the pic. This photo doesn't lend the beautiful coloring.
Finally, this is a photo of a branch/creek that fun thru the back forty. I'm thinking of doing a mini quilt from this pic.....if I have enough energy after all the hay baling.  We'll see.
I hope everyone has a great weekend and a nice Mother's Day.
