Reminder

If you are a "non-responder or OpenID-er" which to me means I have no way of responding to a comment that you've left, please leave a way for me to get in touch with you, especially if you're participating in a blog give-away or if you are asking for information or links.
By leaving your email within your comment, I can find you. I realize that this is sometimes a scary thing to do with scams and all but if you disguise the email as say.....

this is the perfect way to hide from the unwanted eye. So please help me out if you are one of the non-responders.
Thank you, in advance.....Ravelly Rhonda!!

"It's a Dessert Topping, You Cow!"

Warning: This post is not meant to offend anyone.

Rhonda , one of my favorite blogging friends (click on her name to visit her blog) was talking about making her own vinegar the other day....... oh some of you are wondering if I've lost it because my name's Rhonda, too..... lol..... anyway, she was talking about making her on vinegar and how that it's also used to clean things such as glass, stains, etc. As I was reading her how-to, I just started laughing and couldn't seem to stop.
Maybe you should visit Rhonda's blog on vinegar before you finish my blog post...... it will make more sense or maybe not......... confused????
Does anyone remember Chevy Chase and Gilda Radner from the early 1970's Saturday Night Live doing a skit with some weird white foamy stuff in a spritz can. Gilda kept saying that the white stuff was a great floor cleaner and furniture polish and Chevy said it was a dessert topping. It went back and forth for awhile when finally Chevy got fed up and snapped, "It's a dessert topping, you cow!"  I know, I know I'm weird but that was funny, I don't care who you are.  In other words, multi-purpose item.
Anyway, pop over to Rhonda's blog and read all about making your own vinegar. It's a money saving tip, especially if you're into preserving foods and making your own salad dressings.

Blanch, My Way

Blanche Devereaux
Rue McClanahan from the Golden Girls

I'm sorry, not that kind of BLANCH, I'm talking smaller than a bread box.

Specifically squash..... you knew it cause I have loads of the wonderful little yellow goodies from just 7 plants. OMG it's amazing.... they seem to just pop up over night.
So here's the procedure for blanching squash before freezing them.

  • In a large cooking pot, fill with water and bring to a boil.
  • Slice 15 to 20 medium squash, thinly (do not slice before water is boiling. This allows the starch to remain and not seep out).  We wouldn't want all those great vitamins and other goodies to escape.
  • Place sliced squash or whatever veggies you have into boiling water. Boil for 3 to 5 minutes.
  • In another large pot, have iced water ready for dunk veggies into to cool.
  • Scoop hot veggies into iced water for stand for 3 to 5 minutes then scoop into freezer bags.
  • I like to add water in my freezer bags to do away with freezer burn....... just sayin'

Please Don't Adjust Your Screen

If you're wondering why my bird feeder is askew, I'll tell you...... a raccoon got to it.  Yep, you heard correctly, a raccoon.  Did I mention I don't like anything that's furry and wears a mask!
I love watching the tweeters as they feed and flutter around the feeder and all was well until the other night. By morning, the feeder was on the ground with no bird food in sight. I refilled the feeder and it happened again, so I tied the feeder to a branch of the Crepe Myrtle and to a metal rod thinking there was no way the little critter could get to the bird food..... silly me! The little bandit's paws are very similar to a human's.  Those little digets pulled, tuged, pinched and proded until the feeder wound up in the position you are looking at. It reeked of "in your face, human!"
I've now resorted to bringing in the feeder at dusk but believe you me, something will come to mind very soon.  Score one of the raccoon.

Bees Do It

Being a retired science teacher, I just had to do a show and tell moment.  The first photo shows a little bee doing his/her thing by pollinating the blossom.  I was able to get very close because he/she was so busy buzzing around inside there.
The second photo shows the blossom turned under where the squash is developing.
This is one of those WOW moments..... nature is awesome, isn't it!
Big Reminder!!!

Tote It - Baker's Dozen Give Away Reminder #2

In my original post , 13 fat quarters were involved in the give away. In the Reminder post, 2 more fat quarters were added to the give away, making a total of 15 fat quarters.

This is another tote I've just made. I used my project from the Stay At Home Robin.

Don't worry about the white part on the above photo.  It's hiding the name of the person who will receive this tote.  It's a surprise for her so .... ssshhhhhhhhhhh!   LOL

.
This baby will hold all sorts of groceries and those long loaves of french bread. Perfect
Remember, the give away deadline is May 20th.  Leave a comment and tell me about the tote you've made.  If you are a "FOLLOWER" of my blog, you get 2 chances!!!! Good luck.

I Couldn't Make This Up......

I'm back with another "hog" story from the cousins. You may remember the 3 guys and a boar story from weeks ago. I linked to it if you missed all the excitement.  At that time I forgot my camera but this time I had it.  Take a look at this wild hog.  You are looking at 170 pounds of very disturbed hog.  He was not happy. Just look at the frothing mouth ...... not happy one bit!
The cousins (my cousins who are brothers) had somehow managed to get him into their trailer to transport to the town market.  By the time I walked over to the pen, the cousins were breathing heavily and celebrating with high fives and beer.
They were laughin' and reliving the event when suddenly the hog charged the trailer, scaring the living daylights out of cousin #1.  Sorry, no photo of that one.  Beer went everywhere and cousin #1 managed to knock into cousin #3 spilling his beer.  Cousin #2 was choking with laughter when the hog charged again, teeth slashing and tearing into the metal of the trailer, bellowing and squealing something awful.
With that, the cousins took to colorful language, more rounds of beer so I decided to depart.
Cousin #1 told me later that the hog brought a pretty penny.  I just happy that the critter is gone because if he were to get into my garden ...... let's just say I'd have to take a dim view of that situation.

Tote It - Baker's Dozen Give Away

I haven't done a give away in a long while so I thought it was time.
I've recently gotten into totes to carry to the grocery store ...... no more plastic bags for me.
I needed plenty of scraps for this project ....... no problem.  I went with my own design, two 16 1/2 inch squares for the front and back; one approx. 6 1/2 by 48 1/2 strip; and  one 3 by 72 inch strip for the continual handle meaning it will loop under and around the body of the tote.

So, where does the "give away" come in?????
Make a tote of your own.
Blog about the steps that went into making your tote
and add photos of the outcome.
Leave a comment on this post to have a chance at the
13 fat quarters below.  I'd love to see what you come up with.
Deadline: May 20th!
If you've a FOLLOWER of my blog and you participate in the
Tote It challenge, you will get two chances at the fat quarters.
But anyone is welcome to participate to have a try at those 13 fat quarters.
I'll remind everyone a few days before.
Have fun and good luck everyone!!!

;-}

Don't count the days, make the days count!
